we have been using the backup to PST files for a few years now, however we are currently moving to Exchange 2013 and I see that we will need to purchase to "Exchange Protection" Add-on to backup Exchange 2013, is this correct?
also will Backupassist need to be installed on the Exchange server in order to backup exchange?
is backup to PST not available for Exchange 2013?

It's Michael from support.
From Exchange 2013 onwards, Microsoft discontinued support using Exchange MAPI which is required to export mailboxes to PST file.
As you've mentioned, you'll now need to use the Exchange Granular Restore console; which does require you to install BackupAssist on the Exchange server directly.
Information on backing up and configuring Exchange is found at https://www.backupassist.com/education/ ... guide.html.
