RecoverAssist Media Does not Boot

by bakasaru » Sat Aug 22, 2015 1:05 pm

BackupAssist v 8.4.2r1 (8.4.2008)
Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials 64-bit
Backup location: network storage on a dedicated Windows Server 2012 File Server

I never really attempted the RecoverAssist Media recovery process until today. And the recovery media does not boot.

I created the recovery media using the Recovery Tab and selecting "Bootable media based on the installed version of Windows". I added no extra driver, files, or apps. I selected the USB flash drive for the media. I reboot and change the BIOS so that the USB Flash UEFI boots first. The system then goes into a perpetual reboot cycle. The usual Windows splash screen with the animated dots going in a circle loads for a minute or so, and then it reboots and repeats. The same thing happens when I turn off EFI security and select non-efi USB to boot first.

I then did the same as above, but instead of selecting the USB flash drive, I created an ISO. I manually formatted the flash drive as Fat32 and active; then mounted the ISO and copied the files onto the Flash drive. I reboot with the Flash drive to boot first, and it skips right to WinServer2012 on the HD. I then change the BIOS to boot only from the USB (disable the HD entirely) and it just reboots back to the BIOS menu.

I then did the same as above, but instead of manually copying the files to the flash drive. I use the USB flash drive boot utility Rufus to create the bootable flash drive from the ISO. I get the exact same result as above (boots directly to the HD).

I was wondering if my BIOS was glitchy. And so I put my original Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials USB install drive into the computer and boot. And voila, that USB drive boots fine.

So I'm just wondering, how exactly do I get the RecoverAssist Media to work on my system?

Please help!!

Hi There,

It's Gagan from the BackupAssist team. Thank you for posting on our forum.

Sorry to hear that you are facing issues with the Recovery environment.
The reason you are unable to boot using RecoverAssist disk is because there is a known bug for disks created from installed version of Windows.
It happens due to a Windows update installed in the system; you may refer to the following blog: ... again.html

As a workaround, you can create RecoverAssist disk using Windows OS disk and restore data.

I hope it helps.
