Thank you for posting on our forum. I will be assisting you today in answering your question about support for your IBM tape drive.

BackupAssist is compatible with any standalone tape drive support under Windows that functions with the Windows Backup Utility, NTBackup (Start > Run > NTbackup).

If you find that both BackupAssist and NTbackup cannot communicate with your tape drive can you please follow the steps within our tape drive troubleshooting white paper, available online here: ... ement.html), ensuring that no additional third party backup software products are currently installed.

We've found that certain other backup software products can overwrite the drivers for your tape drive device when first installed. Even when these programs are removed from the system, the drivers may still remain. BackupAssist and NTBackup utilise the Windows drivers for communication with your tape drive. Please ensure that the Windows drivers are installed for your tape drive device.

I would also like to take the brief opportunity to inform you that we have discontinued technical support for version 3 of
BackupAssist as of the end of December 2007. We are encouraging version 3 users to upgrade to version 4 and
take advantage of the benefits of the new version of BackupAssist.

You can read more about version 4 and even download a free trial at our website:

If you’ve been thinking about upgrading to BackupAssist v4 but haven’t had the time to evaluate, or if you want to see why you should
upgrade from BackupAssist v3 to BackupAssist v4, you may also want to take a look at the feature comparison document
on our website: ... nV3-V4.pdf
If you decide to upgrade to version 4 of BackupAssist please visit for more details.
