Failing on Phase Two

Our backups are now failing regularly on Phase Two:

Can anybody suggest what the problem may be?

Thanks for contacting us in relation to BackupAssist. I'm another technical support engineer for the BackupAssist software.

The "Media failed to mount error" when occurring quite a way into the backup has been documented in our knowledge base here: ... ledToMount and more often than not refers to a full tape.

Generally you will only be able to get a 1.4:1 compression ratio on your tape drive with hardware compression enabled (Options tab of BackupAssist). Please note that the higher figure on a tape (the 40Gb on a 20Gb/40Gb tape) is a best case scenario and is rarely achievable in practice. The compression ratio is highly dependent on the types of files you are backing up - JPEG images and MP3 files for example, will not benefit greatly from hardware compression as they are already greatly compressed.

We suggest that you either reduce the amount of data you are backing up, split your backup jobs ( ... tingBackup

This is what I suspected.

Halved the data so that it now almost fits onto one tape without compression at all.

Still getting phase 2 saying unable to mount.

Replaced the tapes ... still failing!

Any further ideas?

Thanks Raj,

We did a backup using ntbackup and that worked fine.

I will enable the diagnostics and get you the info you need and hopefully you can solve this for us.
