Exchange Hyper-V

by Ethariel » Tue Jan 05, 2016 3:06 am

Hello,

I've got an error with VM authentication for Exchange detection.

Config :

Host Server : Windows 2012 R2 Hyperv-AD-DNS
Guests VMs : 3 Windows 2012 R2, one dedicated to Exchange 2013, no others roles.
All in the same windows domain.

BackupAssit v 9.2 (licensed with remote backup, hyper-v advanced, Exchange granular) installed on the host.

Creating a new backup task (full system or files, tried both) to rsync, external usb disk ou local folder (tried all of them). I select only the VM with Exchange in the list of items to backup (all the VM are correctly listed).
When arriving on the Exchange VM Detection screen, I fill the user/password/domain with the same user as in the backup user account. I've tried to used a specifically created user (backup operator, exchange organization admin, domain admin) and with the domain admin.
Then I press "test" and always the result is : fail with user authentication (in french so I cannot be sure of what is the english message).

After several tests I've install a 30 days trials version on another system :
Host : 2012 R2 - HyperV, AD, DNS, Files server
Guest : 2012 R2 -Exchange 2013
Both in the same domain.
(This system is of course not connected to the first one, not same lan, not same wan, not same domain)
BA again installed on the physical host of course.

Same result.

I can't believe that it's a bug, it's too obvious. I must miss something in my config, but I don't see what.

The rest of the backup (backup a file, mirror a folder, and so) is working. Only the Exchange VM detection fails.
But my customer first bought BA for the Exchange granular backup/restore...

Thks for any help.

Update: Exchange Hyper-V

by Ethariel » Tue Jan 05, 2016 8:57 pm

Hi to all,

I've done another test on a similar environnement (host is AD/DNS/Hyper-V, several guests, one dedicated to Exchange).
This time the versions are different : Windows Server 2008 R2 (host and guests) and Exchange 2010.

It's working perfectly.

So it seems the failure is linked to Windows 2012 R2 and/or Exchange 2013. I can't have another test environnement to cross test.

Hi Ethariel,

It's Stuart here from the BackupAssist team. Thanks for posting on the forum.

Can you confirm for me that you're running both a French operating system and also French version of BackupAssist?

Have you tried the Exchange authorisation on an older release of BackupAssist to see if this works correctly or not?

Hi Stuart,

On all three tests the OS and BA are in french version.
Also Exchange is a french version.

No, I've just installed 9.2
Which older version also include Exchange VM detection ? I'll try today.

Thks

Hello,

It's Michael Jones from support.

I thought I'd respond while Stuart is away from the office.

Can you try installing version 9.1 to see if it will work?

You should be able to get this release from your re-seller.
Should you have additional questions, please don't hesitate to contact me - I'd be glad to assist you.

Thank You,

Hi Michael,

sorry I miss your answer.
I've remove 9.2 (on the test server) and replace with 9.1 R2.
The VM detection works perfectly, so it seems to be a bug in 9.2

Hi Ethariel,

It's Stuart here again.

Thanks again for your feedback. We've actually put a fix in place in an upcoming release (v9.2.1).

All you need to do is keep in touch with Watsoft since they're your direct support contact and they'll be able to inform you once the release is made and how to apply this.

Have a good weekend.
