"The writer experienced a non-transient error" failed backup

by brogan-ire » Mon Jan 09, 2017 8:28 pm

I'm trying to run a full system backup on our server (Windows 2012) and one of our virtual drive keeps causing the backup to fail (see errors below). The virtual machine is a linux machine and is a backup of a machine somewhere else so it doesn't necessarily need to be included in the full system backup, especially if that prevented the backup from failing.

Has anyone any suggestions on how to solve this?

The following application components were not backed up because either their
consistency check failed or they were skipped during the snapshot process.
These application components will not be available for recovery using this
backup. Please contact the application vendor for help in resolving this issue.
The component virtual machine (7XX86EB4-DXX2-48D1-BXXF-61XXXDA0ACC1) of
... application HyperV was skipped during the shadow copy
operation.

Detailed error:
ERROR - A Volume Shadow Copy Service operation error has
occurred: (0x800423f4)
The writer experienced a non-transient error. If the backup process is
... retried,
the error is likely to reoccur.

Hi there,

Thanks for posting on our forum.

The error is a generic error from the VSS service due to the Hyper-V writer failing.

If the guest machine is only a backup of another machine elsewhere; is there a reason why it's running within the Hyper-V Manager (which is why the Hyper-V writer associating the files as critical)?
I'd recommend turning off the 'Backup' option which is point 2 on this article: https://www.backupassist.com/education/ ... ckups.html.

It's also worth reviewing our Hyper-V Implementation guide as this will give you the best way to achieve stable backups using the software: https://www.backupassist.com/education/ ... guide.html.

Thanks Stuart, it's running because it's constantly syncing with a cloud machine. I will try turning the back up option off and see if that helps.
