Exbackup process is killed due to inactivity. v8.2.0

by kiweegie » Wed Feb 10, 2016 8:10 pm

Morning all.

Running BA version 8.2.0010 on Windows Server 2012 R2.

Backing up individual Exchange mailboxes to an iSCSI drive of 5TB (1.4TB free). No 2GB limit is set and grouping is set as a Single PST for all messages.

Most backups are successful however I'm seeing more and more frequent failures with this error:

Code: Select all
--- Conditions ---
[Critical error EXBACKUP_KILLED_DUE_TO_INACTIVITY] Exbackup process is killed due to inactivity. Backup may not be complete.
  - Additional information: INACTIVITY_HANG_TIMEOUT : Exbackup-2a-Exchange-Server-0.ini
  - Troubleshooting link: http://kb.backupassist.com/errormap.php?BA1898
[Ultra critical error EXBACKUP_EXITCODE_INSTANCE] Exbackup failed due to an installation problem or because another instance was already running. Re-installation of BackupAssist may be required.
  - Additional information: * Exit code: -1
  - Troubleshooting link: http://kb.backupassist.com/errormap.php?BA4401

The first KB article http://kb.backupassist.com/errormap.php?BA1898 mentions issue with version 6.2.0 and resolution is to upgrade to 6.2.1 - we're already on 8.2.0.

The 2nd KB article http://kb.backupassist.com/errormap.php?BA4401 mentions looking for exbackup.exe in the taskmgr and terminate or let it finish - this process is not showing.

Has anyone else seen this issue and can offer me pointers on where to start troubleshooting? We have Backup Exec 2014 running on same server but the exchange server is not being backed up by Backup Exec. Rerunning the job manually usually works ok though it sometimes takes 2 attempts as first manual run also fails with the same error as scheduled job.

thanks, Kiweegie

Further to above I've had same error again this morning. Checked taskmgr on the backup server and exbackup.exe was definitely not running. Re-ran job, failed again. Re-ran job a 2nd time and its now running. What gives?

It's Michael Jones from support.

Firstly, I suggest you upgrade to the latest release of BackupAssist V8; Version 8.4.5. This is an important maintenance release with a number of fixes and improvements.
The updated release notes contain a list of the main fixes for 8.4.5 http://www.backupassist.com/BackupAssist/history.html
To upgrade to 8.4.5 visit http://downloads.backupassist.com/8.4.5 ... _8.4.5.exe
Just install over the top of your current version and all your backup jobs and settings will be preserved.
Hopefully the update will help resolve the issues you're having. If you are still having problems after the update please let me know, by sending in the newest set of diagnostics.
To send us diagnostic information please follow these steps:
1) From the options at the top of the screen, Go to Help > Feedback and support > Contact Support

2) Fill out the form and ensure that the Submit system diagnostics checkbox at the bottom is checked.
If you have any issues using our automated support tool please follow these steps to manually send in your diagnostics file:

1. Go to C:\ProgramData\BackupAssist v8 (server 2008/Vista/Win7)
2. Email support@backupassist.com a zipped version of the following folder: BackupAssist v8
If you find this file is too large to e-mail, you can trim down the size of the logs by removing anything older than a week within the following folders under the BackupAssist folder
- Summaries
- History
- Reports
- Temp

With the Temp folder, it's the default destination for PST and SQL backups to be stored during the backup process, so if there are any of these types of backups contained you can remove these as well as we don't require them.
You can also omit the Catalogues folder.

As an alternative, you can also use our manual upload site which has a limit of 50MB. The URL for this manual submission page is http://www.backupassist.com/BackupAssis ... submit.php.
Should you have additional questions, please don't hesitate to contact me - I'd be glad to assist you.

Thank You,
Michael R. Jones

Hi there,

My name is Casey, and I'm with the BackupAssist team. Thanks for posting on our forum.

It is best practice to only keep one backup product on any given system.

The reason for this is because the different backup products can conflict either other and "fight" over system resources and other system tools. For example, some backup software programs create and utilize their own VSS provider and/or writers, and in doing so the software will completely disallow use of the Microsoft VSS tools that comes enabled with the system (which BackupAssist utilizes).

My recommendation is to remove any other backup software from the system and re-try the backup. If the problem continues after removing the 3rd party backup programs, look for other possible 3rd party programs that would stop the software such as malware and anti-virus software.

I hope this helps, please let me know if you have anything further to add.
Kind regards,

Casey Burns
