BA5 The Backup terminated unexpectedly

For a while now I have been receiving errors on the moment that Backup Assist is starting on the VSS Application Backup.

Event viewer is stating the following

Application: BAExecutorWinApp.exe
Framework Version: v4.0.30319
Description: The process was terminated due to stack overflow.

The strangest thing is, the settings have never changed at all.

Computer Name SERVER
Backup User SYSTEM
ENVIRONMENT Operating System Microsoft® Windows Server® 2008 Standard FE (9) - 64-bit
Locale / Language nl-NL - Nederlands (Nederland) / en-US - English (United States)

CONFIGURATION BackupAssist Version 8.4.1
Backup Type: File Archiving
Backup Destination Hewlett Packard LTO Ultrium-5 Drive

I also have a SME Rsync backup that successfully completes everytime. which is a mystery to me why the LTO backup fails.

Please help me with this matter.

Hi Ienni,

It's Stuart here from the BackupAssist team, thanks for posting on our forum.

How long has this error been occurring?
Have you updated the software recently? If so, what was the version you were running previously?
WIth the tape backup, are you backing up any applications such as Exchange or SQL?

It may be easier to have this resolved if you contact our support team directly. To do this please follow the steps below:
1. Open BackupAssist.
2. Click on the Help menu across the top of the console.
3. Select Feedback and Support... from the drop down menu.
4. Click on Contact Support.

5. Enter the details asked for:

Valid E-mail Address: (so we know where to send our answer to your question).
Subject: Brief overview of your query.

Message: A detailed overview of exactly what your query is about. The more information you give here will make it easier for our support team to assist you.

Make sure the tick box stating 'Submit system diagnostics to help our support team with your query' is ticked and this will zip all your BackupAssist settings so that we can review these specifically for your environment.

If you have any issues using our automated support tool please follow these steps to manually send in your diagnostics file:

Browse to the following folder on the applicable path to your system:

32-bit OS: C:\Program Files\BackupAssist vX (where X is the version number you're running)
64-bit OS: C:\Program Files (x86)\BackupAssist vX (where X is the version number you're running)

Look for a file named and send this to us directly.

If you find that this file is too large to email directly; please upload directly to our support team via ... submit.php.
Please note that there is a 50MB file size limit. If it's larger then please let us know.

Goodmorning Stuart,

The error has been occuring for about two weeks.
It started when using 8.4.0r1, after that I reverted back to 8.2.0, and it succesfully backed the system up with no problems.

I just reverted back to 8.2.0 again and the problem is solved, so I believe there is something changed that wasn't supposed to be changed between 8.2.0 and 8.4.1

Hi again Ienni,

Are you backing up Exchange mailboxes to PST within the backup job?
If you are does this run correctly and then fail?

There is a known issue within v8.4.0 and v8.4.1 which causes backup jobs that contain a mailbox export configured within the job to fail.
We're working on a fix for this in a future release, however you should be able to create a standalone mailbox export job and remove this portion from the File Archiving backup and have both run successfully.

To configure a standalone mailbox export, please follow the steps outlined in the section named 'Creating an Exchange Mailbox Backup' at ... paper.html.

Hi again,

Just an update, we've released V8.4.2 which includes a fix for this issue.

Please update to this release to resolve the issue on your system.
