Merging backup files

I recently had to move my backup destination to a larger disk volume on a NAS device. Unfortunately, the way I built the network share caused a whole new set of backup files to be created (using canned "Professional" scheme). Unfortunately, that spoils the organization of the backup and forces me to archive the original backup set somewhere else. Is there a way to merge the new backup set into the original one?

When we see dramatic changes to the environment, it's common to need to start the backup from scratch.
