Migrate to SAS

by SAFCasper » Tue Nov 25, 2014 6:07 am

Hi,

This is probably very straightforward but I just cannot find the option. Maybe I'm just tired.

Our server (SBS 2011) currently has two 7.2k SATA hard drives. One for OS, one for DATA. Very simple setup.

I am planning to upgrade both...
OS drive to a 15K SAS
DATA to a 10K SATA

My plan is:
- run a full backup with bare metal recovery enabled
- power down the server and swap over the drives
- boot up recovery media and restore the backup to new drives.

Question:
How can I choose which partitions get restored to which drive?
I have recovered in the past but always from SATA to SATA and I simply make sure the drives are in the same port (eg. SATA0 = OS, SATA1 = DATA). Since I'm going from SATA to SAS this logic won't work.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi,

Windows restore will not offer the option to choose which partitions get restored to which drive.

With regards to this scenario, we are yet to test it.

To proceed we'd suggest that you test the restore in your environment.

Also ensure that the disks that you are restoring to are the same size or larger than the original drives.
