Schedule - Intermediate Calrification

Hello,

Apologies if this is a novice question, but even after reading the documentation I am am still not 100% clear on the aforementioned schedule.

What I need clarifying is:

Are the daily backups overwritten each week?

So for example, I started this plan a week gone Friday (24th October) shown simply as 'Friday' - that's fine.

However today (2nd November) 9 Days later, I just went onto the console to check to see how BA is doing and noticed that that Daily backup of Friday (Friday 1 if you will) is not available in the restore console.
Yet (as expected) the following Friday (Friday 2 if you will) the 31st October is.

So my only logical conclusion is that Daily backups are simply overwritten by the next same Daily - Mon for Mon, Tues for Tues etc, only leaving the Weekly (which was on default as Monday 27th October).


I was hoping for this kind of setup:

M, T, W, T, F (week 1)
M, T, W, T, F (week 2)
M, T, W, T, F (week 3)
M, T, W, T, F (week 4)
Month 1 - Never be overwritten
M, T, W, T, F (week 5) - Overwrite week 1
M, T, W, T, F (week 6) - Overwrite week 2
M, T, W, T, F (week 7) - Overwrite week 3
M, T, W, T, F (week 8 )- Overwrite week 4
Month 2 - Do Not Overwrite Month 1
And so on.

It is important that I have daily restore options of up to 4 weeks, by which point I would then simply have a month backup for anything beyond that point.
Then repeat this cycle, always ensuring that I have the ability to restore from any day between that month backup and the next 4 weeks as they happen.

I hope I am getting my concept across and look forward to hearing from you with regards to implementing it.

Failing that I will perhaps consider the N-week Daily schedule (But I have other queries regarding that, and this post is already way too long).

Sorry to hear that you've had these issues backup software.

May I ask about the type of backup job you have configured?

The scheme you are trying to use can be set. You can refer to the following link for more details on choosing the right scheme: http://www.backupassist.com/education/a ... ssist.html

In case you are still unable to set the scheme correctly, I would then recommend you to submit the diagnostic report for analysis?

To submit the diagnostic report you will need to log in BackupAssist console > Help > Feedback and Support > Contact Support.

We will review the diagnostic report and revert.

For N-Week daily

N-Week daily

A set of backups, one for each day of the week, for a user-specified number of sets. The number of weeks included in the archive can be configured from 1 to 53 weeks. If, for example you choose 2 weeks, you will have the following backup sets: Monday 1, Tuesday 1, Wednesday 1, Thursday 1, and Friday 1 AND Monday 2, Tuesday 2, Wednesday 2, Thursday 2, and Friday 2. Backups will be replaced every two weeks on a rotation system.

Restore points/backup history: Up to 365 - one for each day of the year.
Usage: this is the best self-managed scheme to use if you want to limit your backup history to 1 year or less, but want daily restore points. Backup sets are automatically managed by BackupAssist once you choose the number of sets you require.

Is the 2 week cycle fixed, or if I specify 4 weeks will it cycle every 4 instead? or 5,6,7 and so on respectively?

The questions you've been asking are not simple answers because we have many schedule types, each depending on the type of backup engine selected and destination type used.

For the sake of answering your question, I'm going to assume you're using the N-week daily schedule.

You are correct in your thinking that specifying 4 weeks would cycle every 4 weeks instead of 2. Whichever number you choose as the number of weeks (which is what the N in 'N-week daily' stand for) it will use as a rotating cycle. 2 rotates every 2 weeks, 4 every 4 weeks, etc.

If you're using some other kind of backup schedule, you'll need to send us a diagnostic so we can see how you've configured the job.

The first question regarding if daily differentials are overwritten each weak was with regards to the thread title, the schedule "intermediate".

However, as I had hoped, and as you confirmed about how the cycle for N-week daily mechanic works - I am happy to use this schedule instead.

I will just set up an additional job to take a single full backup each month.
I won't even need to concern myself with duplicate since the other job will be overwriting itself. Single instance helps too, such a good feature .
