Backup/Restore to/from local NAS and sync to remote NAS

I am doing some testing to see if it would be possible to backup to a local NAS (using FreeNAS) and use the built in rsync tool to sync the backup to a remote NAS (using FreeNAS). Server is running 2012 R2, BA software version 8.4.5r1. We are using a Backup Type of System Protection to backup to the local NAS, so it is creating a VHD file with the backups. We are then running a rsync task to sync the vhd to a remote NAS.
So far the local NAS backup seems to be running great and I can see the previous days of backups when I go to the restore console. What I am having issues with is trying to restore from the synced offsite NAS location. I don't know how to get BackupAssist to be able to see those backup files since there is not a backup job associated with that location.
Is there a better way to be doing this? We can't backup straight to the offsite NAS because it eats up too many resources when trying to do so.
