Hi All,
I had an issue with the BackupAssistService CPU utilization which I battled with for a few days before looking through the forum and seeing some users experiencing a similar issue.
Eventually my troubleshooting led me to windows Data Execution Prevention (DEP) being the cause.
Summary: DEP caused the BA service and GUI to utilise high CPU usage, uninstalling BA and enabling DEP for essential Windows programs and services only, rebooting, reinstalling BA and rebooting immediately after installation.
Hardware:
IBM X3200 M3
Intel i3
Server 2008 64bit
8GB ECC RAM
Backup Assist Version 6.2 and 6.2.1
Observations:
High CPU usage by the BackupAssistService
Long delays in displaying the BA GUI
Unable to send diagnostic information using BA GUI due to application becoming unresponsive
Workaround:
Uninstall BA | REBOOT
Right click Computer | Properties
Click Advanced TAB | Performance SETTINGS
Click Data Execution Prevention TAB
Select "Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only"
Click OK and REOOT
Install BA and REBOOT IMMEDIATELY AFTER INSTALLATION COMPLETES
Hopefully this helps anyone that is troubleshooting a similar issue.
